We all have seen the crime shows on television. CSI, Snapped, Forensic Files, Bones, and Killer Couples are all aired on local cable channels. These shows are wonderful thrillers! But they also are an inside look to a criminal's mind. I am a huge follower of any sort of forensics. I love the science behind it, so these types of shows are typically at the top of my queue. However, I do think the media releases an excessive amount of information to the general public.
The strategies lab workers use and the weapons used is quite revealing. I understand some is public knowledge and it is illegal to not give accurate information, but i think this should be double checked before the shows air. Not saying I am going to go out and commit a crime, but if I was ever planning it, I could easily figure out how. By studying a wide variety of real life crimes and made up television shows, I do believe I could get away with whatever type of crime I desired. These types of shows tell the public what the police and different investigators are looking for at a crime. They also tell you what types of materials to wear that are "bulletproof" to their investigations.
By being so interested I this type of field I love to be able to get all the details. Like a sponge, I soak up the information and always dig into what I watch. But, that also means any average person can also look into these small facts or details. For me, this is great; however, I think for airing on television, it is too much. Anyone who is maybe thinking of committing a crime could easily do their research and be good to go.
As much as it hurts me to say, our system has loopholes. By showing such information on cable channels, I think we are allowing our criminals to find and use them to their benefit. Maybe I am wrong and just over analyzing the whole situation, but after the Boston bombing I think this is something our government should take into serious consideration.
I totally agree! I was watching SVU one night and they basically explained how to frame someone by switching their blood cells into someone else's blood! I was quite shocked, considering all the murder and shootings that go on in the U.S. I could probably go out and commit a crime without being caught for quite sometime by watching these shows. You made very valid points in this. I noticed you have a few things that need to be capitalized, but that's the only thing I noticed. Maybe rereading could be good. Good job! (:
ReplyDeleteI never thought of watching a show to learn how to commit a crime. It brings up a really good point, and I think more people need to be aware of this. You did a good job using different examples and really making a case. I liked how to you compared yourself to a sponge also. It was a really good analogy! Good job!
ReplyDeleteI love watching all of the crimes shows that are on cabel! It gives me something to do but also gives me something to learn when I am not in school. Great Job!
ReplyDeleteI really like this topic you chose. I've actually had the same idea about people knowing how to cover up a crime because of investigation shows. I used to really enjoy these shows, but I got quite burned out on them since it's all my parents watch. And that there's about a hundred different ones.
ReplyDeleteI use to constantly watch criminal minds before I got netflix. I agree with you completely. Think of The Shooter for example, that movie shows you how to kill the president or an ambassador. In reality though, I feel that they show the common public all of this to prepare us for the crazy people in tho world today. The people that want to know how to commit crimes could learn from multiple sources, but I think tv shows are to show us what crazy people do. This blog was very well written and really got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteMs. Oihus told us about a week ago that there used to be a show that told how to make bombs and stuff. After airing for a while the government told them that they need to leave out a key piece of information to making the bombs. So it is possible that they might do that. Burn Notice gives a lot of info on weapons too. I wonder if that will be changed?
ReplyDeleteInteresting point, Sam. I agree, with you that I enjoy watching these shows because it engages my mind and I want to figure out the mystery. It would be interesting to know what types of regulations these show must comply with (if there are any).
ReplyDeleteBe sure to proofread.
